A day in the life of Sara

Our beautiful food and travel blogger from Switzerland shares her daily meal and workout plan to stay healthy & fit!

Hello everyone!

This is Sara from Sara’s Healthy Kitchen and I am a Food & Travel blogger. I launched my blog in March 2017 as a personal project and I am delighted to say that I have fallen in love with this journey. I have always wanted to share my recipes with friends and family, especially as I have been asked on numerous occasions where they could find my recipes.

 

The main focus when it comes to food is to share what I genuinely eat, therefore, I keep the recipes on the healthy side (with just a couple of naughty treats). It is a lifestyle, which I have chosen to lead and, therefore, would encourage those around me to try and strike a good balance when it comes to nutrition.

 

So the question is what does healthy mean for me?

When it comes to nutrition it means finding the balance between carbs, protein and fats. I do not cut out any food groups and like to follow an 80/20 diet which means 80% of the time I eat nutritionally dense and healthy foods and the other 20% will consist of chocolates, ice creams, alcohol, sweets, cakes!

Healthy to me does not just stop at diet but it also means being active. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to sports and fitness, some may prefer team sports, which I did for a long time. Others may prefer individual sports, taking part in yoga, dance classes, walking, going to the gym or letting loose in fun a fitness classes. Either way, if it makes you feel good and you enjoy it, then DO IT!

Healthy also means a healthy mind, you need to remind yourself to take a mental break every so often. Meditation and mindfulness are two big trending topics at the minute but I hope they are here to stay as I truly believe they are beneficial. I am yet to start my journey with meditation but it is my resolution for 2018.


So a day in the life of Sara would consist of

 

06.30 AM - wake up

07.30 AM - leave for work, I struggle to find my appetite as soon as I wake up in the morning so I tend to eat at work

8.00 AM  - I do like to start the day with a high protein, carb and fats meal.

My options are: 

  •      A bowl of oatmeal (porridge) and top it off with cinnamon, fruit, nuts, seeds or honey. If I want to get an extra dose of protein in, I would sometimes stir in a scoop of vanilla whey protein powder.

  •       2 eggs (omelet, scrambled, poached, fried) half an avocado and toast or a bagel.

  •      Protein smoothie – frozen raspberries, spinach, banana slices, chia seeds, a little milk (almond, regular or non-dairy) a scoop of protein powder (optional)

 

10.00 AM – Mid-morning I would enjoy another protein snack

·      Fage Greek Yogurt with a teaspoon of honey.

·      Slices of turkey on some ryvita crackerbread with a few cherry tomatoes

·      My homemade cereal bars

12.30 PM  - My lunches always consist of protein and carbs as I need the energy to keep me until my workout in the evening

 

  • Chicken in spices with sweet potato and green vegetables.
  • Fig and butternut squash salad with chicken and I would eat this salad with some quinoa or couscous.
  • Salmon fillet with rice and ratatouille.

 

I will always have a little treat after lunch (chocolate or a few sweets)

4.00 PM – Just an hour and a half before my Cross fit session, I will have another little snack.

  •        2 chocolate covered rice cakes
  •        A healthy little banana muffin
  •        A piece of fruit and some nuts

 

7.30 PM – After my workout I make sure I have a good dinner, lots of carbs and protein to help my muscles recover.

  •          Turkey chili with rice and guacamole
  •          Fakeaway tortilla wrap pizza with as many toppings as you want
  •          Stir fry (vegetable, chicken, beef, prawn etc) with noodles or rice

 

08.00 PM – I finish the day with another little treat

  •        A scoop of ice cream
  •        Some chocolate
  •         Sweets
  •        A couple of biscuits

 

This is would what an ideal day would look like for me but being a blogger, I also have events every week so I try to make sure that if I know I am going out in the evening, then I avoid eating too many treats during the day. I also try to work out 5-6 days a week (a mix of cross fit, circuits, salsa and weights) mainly because I love it! I enjoy the variety of my activities.

And at the weekend, I do enjoy going out for dinner, going out for drinks with my friends, family and my boyfriend. In order to enjoy life, but maintain a healthy lifestyle, you simply need to find the right balance. Don’t make yourself miserable by eating foods you do not enjoy and make sure you treat yourself regularly and take part in social events. Be happy, keep smiling and love yourself for who you are!
