Cafe Funkie Town- our neighbourhood Parsi Food destination

Walls adorned with pictures of yesteryear movie icons, a dad’s chair in one corner and a Parsi Saree in the other, and no Wifi in the restaurant, this is Café Funkie Town! A small Parsi food joint nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Jumeirah Lakes Towers. Salaam Life had a chit chat over Bombay coffee, with the dynamic father and daughter duo behind this one of a kind restaurant.

Beaming with infectious energy, as we sip our Bombay style coffee, Roshni tells us how she and her father thought of starting Funkie Town.

“I grew up eating my Grandmother’s Parsi food and since I shifted to Dubai I missed that so much. Then after my Dad took an early retirement from the Hotel Industry and settled in Dubai in 2010, we decided to start a restaurant of our own with of course Parsi cuisine! But we did not stop at that, we also added all the amazing food we used to eat in Bombay, like the Frankies and Baida Roties and the Chilli Cheese Toast, Bhindi Crispy fry, Masala Khichidi etc etc ..the list can go on like our Menu does :)”

So, basically, the inspiration behind Cafe Funkie Town was the Irani Cafes of Bombay. As they say, they were the true charm of the good old Bombay; the bent wood chairs, the marble tables, the Parsi food and the homely atmosphere ... this brought about warmth and touched everyone’s hearts.

Roshni and her father Firoz wanted to bring to Dubai all the food that they missed eating back home in Bombay.

“We wanted Dubai to experience that classic touch which strikes a cord with every Bombayite who grew up in Bombay between the 60's and the 90's. We wanted to take people back in time and experience the Bombay we knew.”

Ok, so what really is the USP of Café Funkie Town?  “Of course, the generations old recipes, which were passed down from my great grand mother who was a Caterer in Bombay in 1930.” So, from bun maska to naan khatai to baida roti to Sali Boti to Dhansak, every dish is worth tryingJ Not only this, Café Funkie Town also has a monthly meal delivery service availiable 5 days of the week for just AED 80.00!!

The Cafe is decorated with items sourced from Bombay and some which are family treasures and have sentimental value attached to them. The restaurant is quite popular among the neighborhood and the food is loved so much that they are soon going to have another branch at the Bay Avenue!

In the end, we asked Roshni to share a favorite recipe of hers with our readers and here is the recipe for Prawn Patiyo

We are a bunch of muddle heads, who want to change the world one “salute” at a time! We want people to say Salaam to themselves, say Salaam to their weaknesses, say Salaam to their fears, say Salaam to all the negative suggestions and thoughts around them and say Salaam to their life!
